Our Definitive Guide To Paper Finishes, Weights & Sizes
Our custom printed products are available in a wide choice of different paper sizes, finishes and weights. With so many options to choose from, ordering print can sometimes be a little overwhelming. That's why we've created this definitive guide to our papers. If you don't know your GSMs from your Microns, or your DLs from your A0s, we're about to reveal all...
Standard Papers
Most of our products are available in three different paper finishes:
Gloss: Gloss paper features a china clay coating which - as its name suggests - results in a smooth, shiny finish. Printed colours tend to appear vibrant and eye-catching.
Silk: These semi-gloss papers also feature a china clay coating, so sit somewhere between gloss and matt.
Uncoated: Our matt uncoated papers are more porous than gloss or semi-gloss paper. Printed colours are relatively subtle and warm.
Your choice of paper often boils down to personal preference. However, it's worth noting that uncoated paper is a good choice if you intend to overprint or write on your printed items.
Luxury & Creative Papers
Our Leaflets, Business Cards, Invitations, Save The Date Cards, Announcement Cards, Greetings Cards and Certificates are also available in a choice of specialist luxury papers:
Accent Antique Magnolia boasts a timeless soft cream hue that's just the beginning. What really sets it apart is its soft, natural texture on both sides. It's matt and tactile, excelling at capturing fine print details. Plus, it's acid-free, making it a top pick for high-impact projects that need to stand the test of time.
Zeta Wove, in a choice of either Brilliant White or Cream, offers unparalleled versatility. The hues are distinct but equally impactful, each providing a perfect backdrop for your print work. The subtle wove pattern common to both shades adds that extra layer of sophistication you're after. Exceptional at capturing fine print details, this paper is the go-to for anyone keen on quality and choice. Ideal for those can't-miss print projects.
Woodstock Betulla Pulp is the go-to choice for the eco-conscious. Comprised of 80% recycled materials and 20% chlorine-free fibres, it's as green as it gets. But what really sets it apart... small wood fibres and grains that run throughout, giving it that authentic, natural vibe. Ideal for when you want your print project to be as kind to the Earth as it is eye-catching. Just remember, go easy on the ink coverage... let the paper's natural beauty take centre stage.
Colorplan Bright White Stucco is a stunner in the paper world. What really makes it sing is its stucco embossing, but only on the front of the sheet, mind you. This gives it a textured, tactile feel that's a feast for your fingertips. Paired with its brilliant white hue, this paper is a knockout for any print job where you want to blend luxury with a touch of the unexpected. Ideal for projects that need to impress at first sight.
Metallic Ice Gold really shakes things up. This unique paper comes with a pearlescent finish and a hint of golden sheen that doesn't just catch the light... it dances in it! More than a simple sparkle, it creates an eye-catching effect that transforms your print project into a visual delight. Ideal for when you're looking to add a touch of glamour.
Business Stationery
Let's not forget our Letterheads and Compliment Slips, shall we? Not only do they come in matt uncoated and recycled matt uncoated options, but you can also level up with:
Conqueror Wove which offers a crisp, high-contrast matt finish that makes every print job look top-notch. What sets it apart is its subtle wove finish... just enough to add a dash of sophistication without overwhelming the senses. It's perfect for those moments when you need to step up your print game but keep things refined.
Recycled Papers
If you like to do your bit for the environment, browse our recycled range which features smooth, white, 100% recycled papers in a choice of different weights. These high quality matt papers are superb quality and indistinguishable from standard uncoated stocks.
If you're looking for something a little more rustic, consider our 100% recycled Kraft range. This earthy brown stock is an ideal choice if you're after a retro, handmade look.
Greetings Card Stock
For our greetings and Christmas cards, we use a versatile 360mic Greetings Card board. This high quality stock boasts a semi-gloss finish to the exterior, making your designs pop, while the interior features a matt, uncoated surface that's perfect for handwritten messages.
Paper Weights
The weight and thickness of paper are key factors in determining its look, feel and functionality. Paper weight is commonly measured in grams per square metre (GSM), while thickness can also be expressed in microns. Generally, the higher the GSM or micron count, the more substantial the paper stock will feel.
For everyday office essentials like letterheads and compliment slips, a weight range of 100gsm to 120gsm is ideal. These weights offer a professional feel without being too heavy, making them perfect for regular correspondence.
When it comes to promotional materials like leaflets, a weight between 150gsm and 170gsm strikes the right balance between durability and foldability. It's substantial enough to withstand handling but not so thick that it becomes cumbersome.
For more robust marketing pieces like nightclub flyers, you'll want something with a bit more heft. A weight range of 250gsm to 300gsm gives you that extra sturdiness, making your flyers more resilient and impactful.
Finally, if you're looking to make a lasting impression with your business cards, go for the thick 400gsm option. This weight exudes quality and durability, ensuring your card won't easily bend or tear, and will stand the test of time.
